Mustard Seed Market & Cafe, Montrose
3885 West Market Street
Akron, Ohio 44333
(In the cafe upstairs)
Our focus this month is on local foods...and on growing OUR own food! As we all know, it is very easy to grow and eat healthy and local when the growing season is at its peak....but what about once Ohio colder weather hits?
As harvest time comes to a close and we begin to look ahead and prepare for next year, this month’s programming will provide information and inspiration on extending our growing season, and beginning next year’s growing season early.
For our growing network of sustainability professionals and activists: this will be a great way to gain invaluable start-up information on how we can weave even more sustainable practices into our lives , through growing some of our own food.
Vince Matlock :
Vince will talk about how to easily and affordably create four season growing environments through providing how-to information on building high tunnels, low tunnels and cold frames.
Karen will discuss ideas stemming from her book, "Local Choices" and provide solutions to the hurdles of buying local, like: lack of cooking skills; convenience; learning to eat seasonally; and knowing what to do in winter.
Lance will provide information on how to grow mushrooms right in your own home, including what Akron-area suppliers have the supplies you will need to begin.
GAINS is for anyone who wants to be part of a growing network of people who care about what happens in regards to our environment and healthy community living. We want to come together to help our Greater Akron area grow sustainably and to make smart decisions moving into the future. We are people who want to contribute, lend a hand, offer experienced insight, and have a good time while we do it.
*We'll see you on November 14 at Mustard Seed! Please help spread the word.*
(Save the date of December 12, 2012 for the following month's meeting, to be held back at Musica. We'll be celebrating the growth of our new network and looking forward to 2013)
