When & Where
Roy van Broekhuizen
I attended Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR, on a soccer scholarship.
I am a proficient guitar player and decided to pursue that profession and opened up for Ike & Tina Turner Revue in the early 70's. I later became Coordinator at Product Development Corporation in Portland, OR, from 1977 to 1983, when I decided to get into the restaurant business. I soon discovered that the restaurant business was not my cup of tea so when a friend offered to run his company in Los Angeles, I took the offer. Metropolitan Presort presorted mail for large corporations at a savings of 4 cents each piece of mail. In 1987 I managed a number of businesses, then started my own mortgage company in 1990 to 1997. In 1997 I became one of the first daytraders in the world at Block Trading, which later became Online Trading Academy. I started as a customer and ended up as VP of Sales & Marketing from 1997 to 2000.
From 2000 to 2004 I was exploring what to do with the rest of my life. My pastor, Dr. Rick Warren, wrote the best seller "The Purpose Driven Life" and after reading the book, I ended up doing Purpose Driven Life seminars in Indonesia August and September of 2004.
My wife tells the rest of my story much better than I do, so here it is:
On January 3, 2005, my husband Roy received a life-changing telephone call from Saddleback church (pastored by Rick Warren, best-selling author of “The Purpose Driven Life”) who asked him to be Relief Coordinator for tsunami-ravaged Indonesia which had, just one week prior, taken the lives of more than 285,000 people. Since 2005 I have been back and forth to Indonesia 27 times, after my contract with Saddleback church ended in 2006, my wife Louise and I started a small handbag factory/training center with 12, today we are able to help over 300. On April 13, 2010, we had the honor of Malaak Compton-Rock, wife of Chris Rock the comedian/actor, share the Laga story with Oprah and her audience, the adventure and journey continues.
