Cancer affects millions of lives every year. Pero la union hace la fuerza (Our unity makes us strong). Please come and help support the Hernandez Family during such a difficult time. Let us show compassion and the strength of family and community by attending this special event to help this family out during this challenging time. Please spread the word!
ABOUT THE HERNANDEZ FAMILY:
Mary Lou and David are first-generation college graduates, both from farmworker family backgrounds in California. They have been married for almost 10 years. They have two beautiful sons, Judah, 7 and Lucas, 3. Mary Lou is a school counselor at Washington Elementary. David is a teacher at Lowell Elementary. They live in Morgan Hill, CA.
Mary Lou and David met while they were both completing their degrees at San Jose State University. Mary Lou was working at the Family Homeless Shelter. She then went on to complete a graduate degree in Education and worked at Hoover Middle School before moving on to Washington. David worked as an afterschool coordinator before teaching and has dedicated almost 15 year to serving downtown San Jose families at Lowell Elementary. He is also a member of Calpulli Tonalehque, Azteca Mexica cultural group. They have dedicated their lives to supporting first-generation, low-income students in San Jose.
Just went medical issues with baby Lucas were getting better, in 2012, Mary Lou was diagnosed with a high grade sarcoma, a type of cancer that arises from transformed cells. In her case, it attacks the nervous system. It is less likely to respond to chemotherapy and inoperable. Her condition is terminal.
As individuals and as a family, they go above and beyond to serve our community. They have planned toy drives, neighborhood festivals and share information about community resources. We know that curing the cancer is out of our hands but we can alleviate some of family's financial burden.
It's time to bring friends, family and our community together for this amazing family.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE MAY 31ST EVENT?
For those purchasing a dinner plate, you are in for a treat. You will get some yummy home-cooked Mexican food prepare by the loving hands of Alica Lopez. Also, you will be entertained by performances from local spoken word artists, folklorico dancers and Mexica Aztec dancers. We will have a silent auction with amazing artwork and other donated goods.
HOW WILL THE FUNDS BE USED?
As medical bills continue to pile up, the expenses keep coming. Currently, Mary Lou is receiving supplemental treatments for increased energy and pain management. These additional treatments are $50-100 each week. Mary Lou and David have exhausted their sick time and vacation time at work. So, if they need to attend appointments or are sick, it affects their paychecks. With two growing boys, a mortgage, gas prices, and living expenses, they are stretched thin. Also, the family must now begin planning for the future, including the worse case scenario; a future without Mary Lou.
The family has expressed a deep desire to secure counseling services for their children and themselves.
All funds (after deducting Eventbrite processing fees) will go toward these expenses.
