SLJ is a NYC public high school in Brooklyn serving predominantly low-income, at-risk students of color. Unlike students at other high-performing high schools, most SLJ students arrive below grade level and come from economically struggling communities and underperforming elementary and middle schools. Students don’t test in.  They aren’t required to present a portfolio. They don’t need to have a certain grade point average. Many come from single-parent households of families who have never sent a child to college.

SLJ transforms these students, who receive a rigorous education that prepares them for success in college and in life. The numbers speak for themselves:

  • SLJ is ranked in the 87th percentile putting it in the top 20% of NYC high schools. It is in the same ranks as specialized high schools such as Stuyvesant and Bronx Science, which have strict academic performance criteria for admission.
  • SLJ has a 92% graduation rate for its senior class.
  • Students from SLJ have a 93% college acceptance rate, with at least 65 percent accepted to four-year colleges. By contrast, nationwide, only 55% of high school completers from the lowest income percentile transition to college, with only 27% of black and Hispanic students enrolled in postsecondary education.
  • SLJ received an A on the citywide School Progress Report in every category - Student Progress, Student Performance, School Environment, and in the newest category - College and Career Readiness.
  • SLJ received the highest Quality Review Score, Well Developed, because of its commitment to support student achievement.

Special thank you to all of the sponsors for the event!

Food provided by: Tap House, Panera , Sahadi’s and Moo Burger.
