Introduction

Additive manufacturing (AM) encompasses an array of rapidly growing technologies that is revolutionizing the design and manufacture of products for transportation, medical, energy, electronics and consumer use.  In support of the growth of these technologies, this course introduces attendees to the full range of AM processes, the materials used in those processes, design flexibility and limitations, and typical applications.  A major focus of the course is the material structures and properties generated by the various processes, as well as the mechanical resolution and accuracy of parts and components produced by AM.  Details will be given on the sequence of steps in AM production:   CAD preparation, process planning, setup, equipment control, post processing and surface finishing.  Discussion and examples will provide insights on application of the basic information to product design, material and process selection, and economic and business aspects of AM.  In addition, descriptions and examples will be given on the use of AM for production of tooling to expedite conventional manufacturing processes.  Demonstrations and hands-on experience will be carried out at the laboratories of America Makes in Youngstown, OH.

Who Should Attend

This course is intended for engineers, technicians, and managers interested in understanding the essential features of AM, evaluating the technologies for their industries, and applying AM in their product development projects.
