Event Details

Learn how to make a fruit tree from scratch with members of Chicago Rarities Orchard Project! In this hands-on class, students will learn the basic whip and tongue grafting method and a brief history of grafting.

Grafting is a technique of joining two living pieces of wood, most commonly used for the propagation of fruiting or ornamental plants. In this class, we will be joining dwarfing apple rootstock with scionwood of an heirloom apple variety. If the graft is successful, you will have an heirloom apple tree that grows no more than 6 feet tall, is suitable for a large pot culture, or a small sunny backyard or parkway. After-grafting care will be covered in class and with handouts.

Class size will be limited to 12 people each session due to safety considerations. Feel free to bring a sharp utility knife or grafting knife to learn on, otherwise grafting knives will be available for purchase at the class - $20 each, cash only. Rootstock and scionwood are not included in class registration but will be available for purchase at the workshop - $6 per kit. One kit per student, more may be available for purchase.
