Pen Bogert will discuss why slavery lasted so long in Kentucky, how freed people celebrated emancipation in Louisville in January 1866, and the challenges they faced in beginning new lives as free people. Bogert, a former Filson staff member, will weave his deep knowledge of African American genealogy into his presentation.
Pen Bogert worked at The Filson as a reference specialist from 1996-2006. His main research interest is African American history, particularly slavery, slave trading, underground railroad, and music. He is writing a book on the history of slave trading in Kentucky and is presently working on the historic preservation staff for the city of Bardstown.
