About This Workshop

Who's it for?

This class is for people comfortable with HTML and CSS who want to start learning how to write programs using JavaScript. During this one-day class, you will develop the foundation you’ll need in order to start on the path of becoming an effective JavaScript developer.

This training is a good fit for people who have had some exposure to JavaScript or other programming languages, but who are looking to develop a more thorough understanding of JavaScript. You should understand things like variables, if statements, and how to invoke a function in JavaScript. Still not sure? Take a stab at solving these two problems, send your answers to us at training@bocoup.com, and we'd be happy to chat about whether this class is right for you.

What you'll learn:

The class is aimed at introducing you to fundamental concepts of development using JavaScript. In this class, you’ll work through the process of building a simple game of hangman; along the way, you’ll learn about functions, arrays, objects, and prototypes, and more. You’ll also learn about approaches that will help you write more maintainable code, and learn how you can use the Chrome developer tools to debg your JavaScript.

You’ll learn how to:

  • develop a simple program in a web browser using JavaScript
  • debug your JavaScript code
  • follow practices that promote code that is readable, maintainable, and reusable

This class will give you a solid understanding of core JavaScript concepts. Upon completion of this class, you’ll be well-equipped to continue your JavaScript learning, and to apply your new skills to basic JavaScript challenges.

This one-day class runs from 9:30am to 5pm, including morning refreshments and lunch.

Preparation

Attendees should bring a laptop with WiFi and a power cord, ready with a code editor and and browser. We strongly recommend the Google Chrome browser.

We recommend one of the following text editors: TextMate, MacVim, Coda, or Sublime Text 2 for Mac; and E TextEditor, Notepad++, UltraEdit, or Sublime Text 2 for Windows. The most important thing is that you use a text editor you're comfortable with.
