Lutheran Social Services of the South

At Lutheran Social Services, we have re-focused around a new mission: Breaking the cycle of abuse by empowering children, families and communities. Guided by our faith, we will create a world free from multi-generational child abuse. You make this possible with your prayers, your time, your advocacy, and your financial support.

In October 2014, we opened a new program here in Austin called BeREAL--Ready Educated Accomplished Leaders. BeREAL is a supervised independent living program for young adults who are transitioning out of the foster care system. BeREAL participants are provided a safe place to live as well as support with basic needs such as utilities, food, clothing, and transportation. In return, participants are required to be full-time students, full-time employed, or some combination of the two, with a goal of working toward self-sufficiency. Additionally, BeREAL provides them with vital life skills training and an opportunity to work with a volunteer mentor who will challenge them to set goals and think about long-term plans.

BeREAL-Austin is an innovative program for the state of Texas, where until now young adults who aged out of the foster care system were often on their own to make a way for themselves. It is our goal to eventually be serving 30 young adults at a time through this program and then to expand it to other cities around Texas. Through BeREAL, we have the chance to intervene at a critical time in a young adult's life, giving them the tools and support they need to make positive life choices for themselves and their families.

Through Amplify Austin, our goal is to raise more than $45,000 in 24 hours, enough to fully support seven BeREAL participants for a full year. Join us and help make this possible!
