Forest Stewardship Workshop:
Longleaf Pine Forest Restoration & Management
February 28, 2011;  8:30 am – 3:30 pm ET
O’Leno State Park
410 S.E. O'Leno Park Road, High Springs, FL 32643

Longleaf pine has many favorable characteristics for landowners with long-term, multiple-use land management objectives. Longleaf pine yields a large proportion of high value solid wood products, is adapted to fire and is resistant to many insects and diseases. Longleaf pine forests provide ideal habitat for a diverse array of plants and animals. Restoration of native Longleaf Pine habitat is an important component to protecting springs and groundwater. The Santa Fe River basin is a critical groundwater recharge area due to the well-drained sandy soils that allow the water to reach the Floridan aquifer, which in turn provides groundwater for springs, drinking water, and agricultural uses. The goal of the workshop is to educate private landowners about longleaf pine habitat management and restoration efforts.
