Brad Traverse - Instructor
Founder, The Brad Traverse Group
Brad Traverse has more than 25 years of experience in government relations, public policy and executive management. His career includes running the D.C. office of a major non-for-profit company, leading a national trade association as its executive director, managing the lobbying activities of a Fortune 100 manufacturing company, and serving as a legislative aide for two U.S. Senators. He has built a strong record and solid reputation both on and off Capitol Hill as a knowledgeable and highly respected member of the government affairs and public policy world, particularly in the field of healthcare.
Brad started compiling job leads more than 15 years ago as a way to connect his job-hunting friends with employee-seeking colleagues in Washington, D.C., and to share leads on often unpublished positions. Originally sent as a weekly email, the number of subscribers and leads grew and grew until it became impossible to manage by webmail.
In 2006, he created www.bradtraverse.com so his members could have access to new leads on a daily basis and so they could more easily search for jobs using the category and keyword functions. Today, Brad has more than 3,000 leads posted on his site, with none more than two months old. He runs the business with his wife, Fraser Traverse, who handles the customer service, technology and book-keeping side of things.
David Kirk - Instructor
Director, Young Atlanticist Program at the Atlantic Council
David Kirk joined the Atlantic Council after working in the Political Department of the 2009 Presidential Inaugural Committee. During the 2008 election cycle Kirk was communications director for the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund’s statewide campaigns in both Colorado and New Mexico. As communications director and spokesman, he was responsible for building an earned media program that received mention in over 200 news stories in less than 7 months. Prior to joining Defenders, Kirk worked as communications director for Mike Waltner for US Congress, where his press operation outpaced three other primary campaigns in earned media by a 3 to 1 margin.
In addition to campaign experience Kirk has worked as a consultant for the Development Executive Group, as a policy analyst in the International Affairs office of Underwriter’s Laboratories Inc., and as project coordinator at Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research. He has interned at the German Marshall Fund, the Office of Congressman John Conyers, Jr., the US Department of Commerce Foreign Service, the National Veterans Legal Services Program, and the Embassy of Mexico in the United States.
David holds a MA in international studies and diplomacy from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies and a BA in international relations from Franklin College in Lugano, Switzerland.
Daniel Whitman - Guest Speaker
Daniel Whitman is Assistant Professor of Foreign Policy at the Washington Semester Program at American University. He received his PhD from Brown University in French Studies in 1979, and pursued a career in the Senior Foreign Service at the U.S. Department of State, 1985-2009.
His publications include an account of his two years as Spokesman at the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, 1999-2001 (A Haiti Chronicle: The Undoing of a Latent Democracy, 2004). He has published articles on African contemporary literature and oral tradition, notably in his book Kaidara, 1987. His travel articles have appeared in a number of publications, including the New York Times and International Herald Tribune.
Whitman taught French at Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts, and was Program Officer at Delphi Research Associates in Washington, DC. He served as a Fulbright lecturer at Marien Ngouabi University, Brazzaville, Congo. In his career in the Foreign Service, he worked in Denmark, Spain, South Africa, Haiti, Cameroon, and Guinea-Conakry. In Washington he served in the Bureaus of African Affairs, Human Resources, and European Affairs. He speaks French, Spanish, and Danish.
