Event Details

Today we will be talking with Ashley Norris who is working with the City of Milwaukee to help organize their Small Business Development Week that they are hosting in May 2013. In the past, this conference has been referred to as the Small Business Sustainability Conference. This is the first year that they are extending it beyond only a half day of workshops and seminars.

She thought that the idea of creating a competition to engage the audience further would be a great plan idea to move forward with for the Small Business Development Week.

What type of challenge could the attendees vote on at the Small Business Development Week?

By promoting team competition and using a simple business plan pitch in a competition format, conference attendees could vote on a fantasy business plan that would benefit the Milwaukee small business community.

In the Fantasy Camp example with BizMedia, the competing teams prepared their solutions prior to the conference and the winners were selected by the attendees of the commercial real estate conference. I think this could be a good model to follow for the Small Business Development Week.

Islands of Brilliance

Islands of Brilliance is a technology-centric creative learning experience developed specifically for children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Our classes help students gain the focus, socialization, and sense of accomplishment often lacking in traditional education and programming. We currently focus on students ages 9-16 diagnosed with Autism, Aspergers, and PDD-NOS. We offer Spring, Summer, and Fall sessions in which students are matched 1 : 1 with a volunteer mentor from the creative services industry. Together they create a poster or book, using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop software.

"Together, we are changing the lens from special needs to special gifts."
