Event Details

Would you donate to a for-profit organization that had a social mission? What motivates you to donate time or money, and how much do tax deductions matter? Do you trust a non-profit entity to be more responsible with your money than a for-profit one? How would a for-profit need to tell their story about their choice of a business structure to earn your trust and your financial support? These are just some of the questions we'll explore during this focused lab.

Diana is looking to launch an organization that would traditionally be incorporated as a nonprofit organization, but prefers the idea of establishing an LLC and simply structuring the business to reflect its social mission and accountability to the community. While there are structural benefits to a for-profit business structure, the choice would mean foregoing grant money as a source of funding and missing out on the draw of tax-deductible donations. Diana will briefly present the concept of Mindful Milwaukee, answer any questions, and then we will focus the discussion on the question of business structure and how to make this particular approach to social entrepreneurship a success.

Some of the topics we will discuss are:

- The pros and cons of for-profit and non-profit business structures, including new structures and certifications such as B corp and L3C, and what's a good fit for Mindful Milwaukee

- How to tell the story about why Mindful Milwaukee is a for-profit organization, even though donations are a significant funding source, in a way that generates enthusiasm rather than distrust, and maximizes donations

- How to establish transparency and a non-profit ethos in a structural for-profit company

We continually ask “Why?”

and fervently believe “Why not?”

It’s a brave new world. One which requires a brave new approach to how branding, marketing and business overall gets done. We’ve parlayed our decades of experience and our understanding of the new now into a philosophy and model for helping clients connect with their communities.

Rooted in digital experience strategy and design, we work with clients on finding the right problems to solve and the most effective solutions to solve them, both online and off. All of this is delivered within a collaborative framework and business goal mindset.

In each service offering–Agency: client brand platform solutions, Lab: exploratory ideation and consulting, Studio: new product and platform development–we work to translate ideas into meaningful experiences. Welcome to Translator.
