Basic flood class:
The purpose of this class is to familiarize agents with the eligibility, rules, and coverage of the
National Flood Insurance Program. This class is now a required part of continuing education in
many States and is also required by Write‐Your‐Own (WYO) insurance companies in order for
agents to continue writing flood insurance with those carriers.
The discussion will begin with a review of the need for flood insurance. It is here that the
different types of floods, their causes and characteristics, hazards posed, necessary
precautions, and related stats will be discussed. Following the flood overview, we will introduce
the NFIP, its origins, intended purpose, and current functions. This will segue into a more
detailed description of the NFIP’s core functions of mapping, regulating, and insuring. Questions
and criticisms of the NFIP, followed up by a brief summary will conclude the presentation.
