DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS COURSE IF YOU TOOK IT LAST YEAR. In this course students will learn the basic practices of Tai Chi, Kick Boxing and Self Defense, Yoga, and Fencing. Special teachers Master Taningko, who owns and runs the Karate Studio across the street from the school, and Greg and Cheryl Paquette, who teach fencing in a studio in Dayton, will provide the expertise and equipment for those practices, and Lily Chen will teach the Tai Chi. Philip Bottelier will teach yoga, and also connect their fitness learning to the basic biology and physiology of all practices learned. Emphasis will be placed on the mind/body connection, and how learning to focus, breathe, and become proficient at these practices can help the student in their daily lives.
Students will practice Kick Boxing/Self Defense and Fencing 2-3 times per week each. Fencing will be at the school in full gear (provided for the student), and we will walk across the street to the Master Taningko’s gym. Yoga and Tai Chi will supplement the students time both as beginning/end of day activity. Students do not need to be physically fit to participate, and the goal is to foster an environment where each students’ improvement and understanding of all practices is celebrated, and this will also be logged in a journal.
The class product will be a demonstration of the practices learned, the student product will take the form of posters and/or other displays (actual or digital) that illustrate some of the concepts of the student’s choice of the four practices. As well, each student will earn a certificate of success for completing the course.
