First Place was founded in 1998 to prevent homelessness and poverty among the growing, yet largely overlooked population of youth who age out of foster care every year in the Bay Area. The organization has grown from an Oakland-based grassroots project into the largest provider of housing and support services for former foster youth in California. Last year, First Place served over 2,000 young people, providing intensive one-on-one counseling in developing healthy living skills, obtaining employment, finishing high school and enrolling in college, access to safe, affordable and permanent housing, and access to critical community resources.
