ABOUT First Fridays @ OIP-ISR
The UCLA Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) is pleased to host a monthly educational series and mixer called First Fridays @OIP.
The continental breakfast event will occur on the first Friday of every month from 9:00-10:30 in our conference room Suite 210, the Kinross Building.
The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for the campus and local communities to come and meet with our staff and interns, to hear a brief presentation on a variety of topics relevant to intellectual property and entrepreneurism at UCLA and to ask questions and network.

May 03 | Theme: Startup UCLA Accelerator - Overview & Latest Developments
Speaker: Robert Jadon, Director, Startup UCLA Accelerator
Bio: Robert Jadon is a technology entrepreneur and investor based in Los Angeles. Robert is currently president of Scale Software, a startup focused on the needs of non-profits, and runs the Startup UCLA Accelerator for web and digital companies.
Robert’s previous company, Micro Memory, was a leader in the storage networking and DSP markets. It was acquired by VMETRO, and subsequently Curtiss Wright (NYSE: CW). After leading various product roles, Robert left to pursue angel investing. Robert is an early investor in AnyMeeting, GotCast, Shift (GraphEffect), TicketMob/LaughStub, Wedgebuster and various other web companies.
Robert is also a manager of the Dauntless Fund, which focuses on consumer-facing web companies, a member of the Tech Coast Angels, and an investor/advisor to the Amplify.la Accelerator based in Venice, CA.
April 05 | Theme: PortTechLA - Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Business Incubator
Bio: As serial entrepreneur, Stan Tomsic's experience in the technology and green/clean tech industries spans over 25 years. He was founder and co-founder of several companies where he held management, executive and CEO positions. Stan was the administrator of the Business Technology Center of Los Angeles County, an accelerator incubator for high technology entrepreneurial companies. He is a partner of ACODA Technology & Investments, LLC, a firm specializing in strategic assistance, business consulting, investments and mergers and acquisitions for technology and services companies. Stan is also a Pasadena Angel, serves as a member of the board of directors and advisors for several technology companies, and is a member of numerous professional organizations. He is chairman emeritus of the Executive Committee of the Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum, co-founder and chairman of the Business Incubation Network of Southern California (BINS) and co-chair of LA Metro for Cleantech Open. Stan frequently presents and speaks on entrepreneurship, incubation and high tech start-ups.

Guest Speakers: Howard Marks, StartEngine and Paul Kessler, Bristol Companies
Howard Marks is the founder and co-chair of StartEngine, Los Angeles' largest startup accelerator, determined to make LA a top tech entrepreneurial city. Marks was the founder and CEO of Acclaim Games (now owned by Disney), and the co-Founder of Activision and Chairman of Activision Studios (1991-1997). In 1991, Marks and a partner transformed ailing video game giant Activision into a $14B market cap video game industry leader. Marks has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan, is bilingual and is a triple national of the U.S., United Kingdom, and France, and has over 30 years of experience as a veteran of the technology industry.
Paul Kessler is Co-Chair of Start Engine and is Principal and Founder of Bristol Capital Advisors, LLC. Mr. Kessler has extensive experience in all aspects of financing emerging growth public/private technology and bio technology companies. Mr. Kessler is recognized as a prolific investor, financier, venture capitalist and operator having completed over 500+ investments. Companies that he has directed investments in, founded, or provided early seed capital to include Allis Chalmers, Contango, Cheniere Energy, Derycz Scientific, The Los Angeles Film School, Genesis Biopharma, Miller Energy, Gamzee, and Filter Foundry.
November 02 | Theme: LA’s Startup Ecosystem – at a Tipping Point
Speaker: Adam Winnick, Investor and Entrepreneur
BIO: Adam Winnick is a venture partner with GlenmontWest, a "Micro VC" fund focused on Los Angeles. GlenmontWest is also the principal investor in LA's premier startup accelerator, MuckerLab. Adam is also the CEO and Founder of Subblime, which provides YouTube channels a platform to more easily monetize and engage their audience. Adam was previously the President and Co-founder of iCrete, a LA-based provider of collaboration software for concrete producers and their partners. Adam was also the co-founder of ITU Ventures, a seed stage investment firm based in LA, dedicated to helping commercialize technology from the nation's leading research institutions. Adam has an MBA from Stanford and a BA in Econ from Tufts University. He also grew up in Los Angeles.
October 05 | Theme: Startup UCLA Phase II

Startup UCLA seeks to develop a culture of startup thinking on campus. We strive to connect students with alumni who are successful in the entrepreneurial world; to give students opportunities to learn the basics of startup thinking; and to provide a community in which students can develop and launch their early-stage ideas. With the graduation of our first accelerator class, Startup UCLA is now focusing on a growth strategy for Phase II of the program. Topics to be discussed include:
- Creating a Bruin-centric angel network
- Establishing a student seed fund
- Integration into the UCLA entrepreneurial ecosystem
- Crafting a campus-wide entrepreneurship curriculum
- Building partnerships with the external startup community (i.e. internship pipelines, roadshows, etc.)
