Financial modeling essentials for startups
Wednesday, July 18th from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Jerry Cohen - Former VC, Professor
European sovereign defaults...Paul Graham's advice to startups to raise the cash if it's available. Things aren't getting dicey just yet for startups...but it's hard to tell what's around the corner. That's why as an entrepreneur raising money or as a startup spending money, you need to have a solid handle over your financial picture. This is a class any angel or VC would want you to take.
Jerry Cohen will walk you through how to create a lean financial model, covering important topics such as revenue/cost drivers, essential reports for your investors, and estimating your financing. This class will include crucial lab time that will allow the students to put into practice the lessons that were taught by Jerry Cohen, as well as get feedback from Jerry himself.
Prerequisites - A finance/business background is not required but some familiarity with Excel is. Class participants should be founder-level at a startup or working at an early stage company and actively thinking about financial projections.
Jerry Cohen is a founding member and Principal of Opteris, a private equity firm, and a former associate at Zone Ventures, an early stage VC fund in the $6 billion DFJ network. Jerry is a guest lecturer at the UC San Diego Rady School of Business, where he teaches financial modeling for startups, and is an Adjunct Professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he teaches a course titled Digital Media for Business.
