Event Details

The public is invited to a community event highlighting Black History Month on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 from 5-8pm. This FREE event is sponsored by the Black Student Union's (BSU's) at Encinal and Alameda High Schools, students from Island High School, and the Alameda Multicultural Community Center. The evening will center around the award-winning film More Than a Month and will conclude with a panel discussion and community dialogue. It will take place in the Multipurpose Room at Ruby Bridges Elementary School. EVERYONE IS WELCOME.

Should Black History Month be ended? African American filmmaker Shukree Tilghman explores this question as he embarks on a cross-country campaign to do just that. Both amusing and thought-provoking, More Than a Month examines what the treatment of history tells us about race and power in contemporary America.

Following the film, a panel featuring local high school students, educators and community members will engage in community dialogue with the audience. The panel will be moderated by Rick Moss, Chief Curator and Director of the African American Museum and Library at Oakland. Students will close the program with a presentation of “Profiles of History,” biographies honoring gamechangers, not just in Black History but American history.

Ruby Bridges Elementary School is located at 351 Jack London Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501. The venue is wheelchair accessible. The bus line #31 stop at Main & Atlantic is a 15-minute walk.
