Event Details

On Friday, August 8, Lola’s Outdoor Retro Cinema at Sunnyside Cemetery, in partnership with Long Beach Cinematheque, presents FIGHT CLUB!

An instant cult classic, like its source novel by Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club stars Edward Nortan as our unnamed narrator, Brad Pitt as mysterious Tyler Durden, and Helana Bonham Carter as the tortured Marla Singer.  At once a dark comedy, borderline-surreal satire, and opus of brutal violence, the film examines several themes all at once: fascism, consumerism, loneliness, masculinity, and a desperate need for human contact – even if that contact is punch in the face that leaves you a bloody pulp.

Director David Fincher’s 1999 film made Twentieth Century Fox’s CEO Rupert Murdoch so angry about the film’s subject matter in early screenings that it ultimately lead to Fox’ studio chief Bill Mechanic resigning the following year. When it was first released, it left mainstream audiences, who were expecting an adrenaline style action movie or some kind of Rocky for the 90′s, totally baffled. It only made $37 million dollars upon release in the United States on a $63 million budget, but Fight Club quickly became a cult favorite on home video, ultimately becoming one of Fox’ highest grossing DVD’s of all time, and is considered a defining movie that captured the feelings of frustrated Generation-X males all over the country.

This special event is sponsored by our friends at Lola’s Mexican Cuisine!

ALL AGES event! This film is Rated R – those under 17 must be accompanied by parent or legal guardian.

Gates: 6:30pm / Film 8:30.  Limited, stacked parking available at Sunnyside – come early starting at 6:30! Plenty of street parking across Willow from Cemetery.

Low-back chairs, blankets, picnic baskets welcome! If you insist on bringing taller chairs, please sit to the sides of the crowd in courtesy of those around you. Designated smoking area near cemetery gates – no smoking on cemetery grounds.
