5G cellular entices us with the promise of a mobile broadband experience far beyond our current 4G systems. Operators and carriers are planning to leverage metro cells, small cells, and femto cells to improve the user experience and improve overall network efficiencies. The data rates of 5G would imply that the backhaul be fiber optic, however it’s unlikely that fiber will be economical for all installation sites. Microwave backhaul is an option, but technological and regulatory challenges will need to be addressed before this can be deployed. Are we investing enough in development of the enabling technologies which will enable wide-scale 5G deployments? Our panel of experts will review the economic opportunities, examine the technical challenges, and discuss possible paths to regulatory solutions.
