Topic

Purifying the Muddy Water – Turning a “Wild Wild West” Intranet Into a Something Useful

You’ve probably heard “I can’t find anything” from your users when trying to use an out-of-the-box SharePoint intranet.  This session will walk you through a typical initial SharePoint implementation which included poor information architecture, navigation, consistency, search, etc.,to a new and improved intranet that focused on “I can find it!”.  We will discuss pain points, high-level project milestones, go-live, and lessons learned.

Speaker

Erin Glenn

Erin is a passionate SharePoint Business Solutions Architect. In the early 2000's, she asked her software development manager how she could get into "web stuff" when she didn't want to write code and is certainly not a graphic designer. Little did she know that SharePoint was that "web stuff" she wanted to do!

She has been working with SharePoint since 2005 (SPS2003) for several Richmond, Virginia organizations which include two large Virginia law firms (Hunton & Williams and McGuireWoods), an IT consulting company, and the Virginia Housing Development Authority. Today, she is the SharePoint Administrator for Goodwill Industries serving Central Virginia and Hampton Roads. She has also co-lead the Richmond SharePoint User Group since 2009 and has co-chaired the annual SharePoint Saturday Richmond event since 2009.

During her SharePoint career, Erin has conquered two major intranet rebuilds where she was the technical lead. She’s also been involved in the planning of two others.

She is passionate about the end user, focusing on not over complicating solutions, such as providing a phased approach. She also focuses on just in time training - giving them just enough information to perform their actions. She wants them to get comfortable doing five steps first. Then, she will show them five more. She performs her own requirements gathering/business analysis sessions and builds the solutions herself with out-of-the-box tools, including browser-based, SharePoint Designer, and some third-party applications. She also creates her own user documentation and facilitates training.
