Event Details

Come stroll the CREW marsh trails with Dr. Clyde Sorenson, NC State University Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor of Entomology – A master storyteller and teacher, Clyde has been voted a favorite professor by students at NC State University. In the words of his students: “He is extremely interested in insects and he transmits this enthusiasm to his class.”

Clyde says: "In terms of species diversity, insects are the dominant forms of life on this planet, with about a million species identified so far, and perhaps millions more yet to find. In terms of biomass- they out-weigh us many fold. It's not surprising, then, that insects are critically important to the functioning of virtually all terrestrial ecosystems on earth. Come meet some of our chitinous fellow beings and learn about some of the many ways insects impact our lives, for good and for bad."

This is a hands-on, minds-on hike where you'll learn about the amazing lives of dragonflies, beetles, mosquitoes, bugs, butterflies, and more!

This is part of the CREW Strolling Science Seminar series - half-day scholarly hikes for adults at the CREW Marsh Trails. Each seminar engages you in citizen science on a specific topic related to the watershed and wildlife of CREW. Seminar leaders are experts in their fields. Gain in-depth knowledge, hands-on field experiences, and get access to online resources. You’ll be able to go home and engage in a citizen science project of your choosing. For more info go to the CREW Trust website at http://crewtrust.org/environmental-education/adult-education/

Fee: $10 for CREW Land & Water Trust members, $15 for non-members

You may register here (and incur service fees) or mail in the registration form located here.

This series is funded in part by a Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program Public Outreach grant.

CREW Land & Water Trust

The CREW Land & Water Trust was established in 1989 as a nonprofit organization to coordinate the land acquisition, land management, and public use of the 60,000-acre Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed. We work closely with our partners, the South Florida Water Management District and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to ensure the protection of the watershed. This watershed, the largest intact watershed in south Florida, straddles Lee and Collier Counties and provides aquifer recharge, natural flood protection, water purification, preservation of wildlife habitat, and public recreation.  CREW's majestic 5,000-acre marsh is the headwaters for the entire watershed.
