Event I: Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is
This session will kick off with a brief welcome and then look at the business case for social entrepreneurship—the opportunity to change lives and communities. Panelists will discuss socio-economic business models and the associated challenges, rewards, profit and potential for social good. This session will also explore the intersection of broadband technology and social entrepreneurship with an emphasis on nonadopters. The panel discussion will be moderated by Leslie Aun (Venture Philanthropy Partners). Panelists include: Zvi Band (ProudlyMadeInDC), Raymond Bell (H.O.P.E. Project), and Daniel Doll (SoapBox Soaps).

Keynote Speech and Event II: What’s in IT for me?
This session will kick off with a keynote speech by Victor L. Hoskins, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development. After the keynote, we will look at the local tech start-up scene and the role of the District government in growing, supporting and retaining technology-related companies in the city. Panelists will discuss the challenges in starting a tech business, success secrets of tech start-ups and the benefits of starting a tech company in the District. The panel discussion will be moderated by Donna Harris (Startup America Partnership). Panelists include: David Zipper (Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development) and Julie Silard Kantor (Barrel of Jobs). An additional panelist will be announced soon.

Event III: The Role of Inclusion in the Future of Tech
This session will address some of the most important issues of inclusion in broadband technology, particularly whether greater gender and ethnic diversity is an important goal for tech organizations, employers, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. Panelists will discuss challenges to fostering diversity and strategies to unlock the untapped potential, markets and ideas that can come from unexpected sources. The panel discussion will be moderated by Dr. Nicol Turner-Lee (National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications). Panelists include: Liz Steininger (Rails Girls DC), Joseph Corbett (iStrategyLabs), and Christine Celise Johnson (DiversiTech).

Connect.DC - OCTO's Digital Inclusion Initiative

Connect.DC was established by the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) of the District of Columbia Government to draw attention to the advantages of technology and collaborate with government, nonprofit, and corporate entities to advance citywide broadband access and education initiatives. Connect.DC is funded by a combination of OCTO resources and two American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grants—State Broadband Initiative (SBI) and Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP)—through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) at the United States Department of Commerce.
