Facilitating Inquiry Based Professional Learning Communities
Facilitating Inquiry Based Professional Learning Communities is a three-day professional development that teaches participants the skills, knowledge and behaviors that promote professional, collaborative inquiry focused on student learning. Participants will learn effective facilitation techniques to advance team development along with collaborative protocols for implementing an inquiry cycle; these include tools for analyzing student work, creating common assessments, and developing student-centered inquiries into practice. This workshop is designed for teacher or mentor leaders, coaches or administrators who facilitate communities of practice. The workshop is designed for K-12 particiopants including teachers, teacher leaders, and site and district leadership.
The concept of learning communities expands traditional thinking about how teachers improve
their practice and what we mean by jobembedded professional learning. Individual
practice improves in the context of focused, communal inquiry. Raising the achievement of every student,
especially those far below grade level, is complex work. It requires the collective thinking of every
teacher, support staff and administrator. This collective thinking must be nested in a culture of
collaboration and inquiry. A re-culturing of a school happens one learning
community at a time. As teams learn to work as a professional community openly engaged in
discussing teaching practices and conditions that support student learning, a gradual shift starts to
happen in which teachers’ students and teachers’ strengths are addressed and recognized before
their weaknesses; adults take responsibility for student learning. So over time, the professional
learning organization starts to transform into one that believes in students and in each other.
As an organization that focuses on the induction and support of new teachers, NTC recognizes that
developing the collective capacity of teachers and teacher leadership is what will accelerate
teacher development and sustain professional culture.
By attending this session participants will:
*Deepen understanding for the rationale, characteristics and potential of professional learning communities
*Learn about the role of the facilitator to self assess and set goals based on effective faclitator behaviors
*Practice facilitation skills and protocols including fostering trust, active listening, developing norms and
creating effective agendas.
*Explore phases of team development and facilitation strategies that support high performing teams learn and practice protocols that support facilitators and team development including collaborative decision-making and consensus building
*Practice effective prevention and intervention facilitation strategies that effectively address diffi cult
*Understand the components of an effective inquiry cycle
*Learn about the different inquiry structures and practice developing effective inquiry questions
