“Louder Than Words:” Using Mime Performance to Develop Literacy Skills
Facilitated by The Center for Arts Education
This interactive dance/theater workshop will explore the role of the arts in vocabulary development and literacy as modeled in CAE's partnership with the NYC DOE’s Office of English Language Learners. The focus of the session will be on the use of non-verbal movement, facial expression and gesture to convey meaning, including character, emotions and scenario.
Reading Between the Lines: Expanding Student Literacies Through the Exploration
of the Hidden History of Northern Colonial Enslavement
Facilitated by Michael Lord, Historic Hudson Valley
Using primary documents, Pretend to be Free: Imagining Runaway Slaves, integrates arts, ELA and social studies to uncover the hidden history of slavery in the North. Focused on a unique approach to reading and understanding complex text, this workshop explores the connections across visual, artistic, verbal and writing literacies. Attendees will not only experience visual thinking with artistic and written interpretation, but the little known history of slavery in our own city. For middle school teachers, this program will also introduce you to a free program that will be offered in NYC public schools next year designed to personalize the past and make the history of northern colonial enslavement relevant to students.
New National Core Arts Standards and the Common Core
Facilitated by Dr. Scott Shuler, National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS)
In this session, Dr. Shuler, a co-chair in the development of the new National Core Arts Standards, discusses the standards’ vision of empowering students to carry out key artistic processes. He will also discuss explicit references to the arts in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English/Language Arts and process connections to CCSS Mathematics standards, which afford opportunities to support quality learning in all three subject areas.
TASK: Learning through Collaborative and Improvisational Art-Making
Facilitated by Alexander Santiago-Jirau, The Center for Arts Education
Based on the work of contemporary artist Oliver Herring, TASK is an improvisational art-making event that allows participants to use their creativity, and collaborate with other artists and educators in a fun and supportive environment. TASK events involve writing a task on a piece of paper and adding it to a designated “TASK pool.” Participants then pull tasks from that pool and interpret them, using an array of available materials. The result is a room full of spontaneous art and performance projects happening at the same time. Learn how to use TASK in the classroom with participants of all ages.
Workshopping the Workshop
Facilitated by Geoff Trenchard, Urban Word
This session will address and model strategies for generating and refining creative writing curricula, and establishing successful workshop programs in a variety of environments. The session will cover pedagogy, preparation, and facilitation strategies across diverse communities and groups.
Unlocking Critical Thinking thru Lively Conversations About Art
Facilitated by Amy Chase Gulden, Visual Thinking Strategies
Visual Thinking Strategies has proven to leverage student discussion of works of art (a kind of "complex text") to develop critical thinking, communication skills, and visual literacy across all kinds of learners, including those who struggle most. The workshop will demonstrate the discipline of facilitating open-ended, student-driven, and rigorous discussions that support Common Core readiness. Come experience the three key questions to unlock rich dialogue in your own classroom, plus links to images you can use right away, including an online writing component.
