Event Details

In commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the Schomburg Center will house a four-day exhibition that will present Abraham Lincoln's handwritten draft of the Preliminary Emancipation as well as The Official Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation from the National Archives. The exhibition will also present pre-and-post-Civil War era Photographs of enslaved and freed black women, men and children drawn from the Schomburg's collection produced between the years 1850 to 2010. Additionally, the Centennial Address, written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and given during the 100th Anniversary of the Issuance of the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1962 in New York City, will also be included in this exhibition.

A curriculum guide will compliment the exhibition and will be made available for download via www.schomburgcenter.org/emancipation150.

The exhibition was organized by Board of Regents, The New York State Education Department; Dr. Merryl H. Tisch, Chancellor; New York State Museum, New York State Library, New York State Archives; Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture; and National Archives and Records Administration.

The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is grateful to The James S. and Merryl H. Tisch Foundation for its generous support of the anniversary celebration and exhibition-related programming.
