Building Scalable Systems with REST and Resource-Oriented Architectures
Time: 9:00 am - 12:30 pm
This half-day workshop provides a comprehensive vision and practical framework for adopting a modern view of software development and information technology infrastructure. The presentation will walk through web architectures with a view to building information-centric systems that are flexible, scalable and extensible.
This is primarily a technical workshop targeting an intermediate to advanced audience, but much of it will be accessible to patient and motivated business-oriented individuals who want to understand how technology can provide real, dynamic value to the business side of the house. It is based on real, transformational implementations performed at customer sites.
Introduction to Big Data Analysis with the R Language
Time: 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Making the most of your investment in Big Data requires a good understanding of the new analytical tools and languages that are available. There’s been an explosion of these tools, built to assist analysts and developers with issues such as concurrency, functional programming, and domain-specific problems. The R Project is perhaps the best known and provides a wide variety of statistical, data mining and visualization capabilities. Among the reasons it is popular at this early stage in the evolution of Big Data, is because it can be adopted by analysts at various levels of technical expertise, including those with very little programming experience.
R is a cross-platform environment with comprehensive documentation. As such, it can be a little overwhelming on where and how to start using it. This talk will introduce you to the environment and help you along the path to solve Big Data analytical challenges. A light background in statistics would be advantageous for any attendees of this session, although rank novices will at least gain some insight into the issues, challenges and requirements for the analysis of Big Data.
This comprehensive workshop will cover:

Speaker: Brian Sletten, President, Bosatsu Consulting, Inc.
Brian Sletten is a liberal arts-educated software engineer with a focus on forward-leaning technologies. He is a system architect, a developer, a mentor, and a trainer. Brian has been speaking about REST, the Semantic Web, and other technologies around the world as part of conferences such as NoFluffJustStuff, JavaOne, Jazoon, the Spring Experience, the Rich Web Experience, and Museums on the Web. Brian has written for DevX's Semantic Web Zone, JavaWorld and has contributed chapters to O'Reilly Media's "Beautiful Architecture" and "97 Things Every Project Manager Should Know". He has a B.S. in Computer Science from the College of William and Mary and currently lives in Los Angeles, CA. He consults and speaks frequently about next generation technologies around the world.
Both of these classes by Brian have received rave reviews when presented at major industry conferences in the past year.
