Photek stands mercilessly on the edge. A sonic scientist, pushing both his sounds and fans' expectations to the outermost limits since 1994, he floods the footnotes of electronica like MP3s clutter up your hard drive.
He was there when Goldie declared it drum & bass but to this day he still prefers the term jungle. He chats regularly with James Lavelle, wondering what would've become if his remixes of Attica Blues had led to a more affirmed relationship with the agenda setting Mo Wax. His major label link with Virgin is the blueprint of how things once were; endless time and budget-free worries led to 'Modus Operandi'. A conceptual experiment of time and emotive atmospherics, it pushed the drum & bass template to the edge. Previously misinterpreted as a lone paranoid soldier, a conspiracy theorist and a man from Ipswich, Rupert Photek Parkes is none of the above. Each tale you'll be regaled with elsewhere online is based on a spec of truth that's exploded beyond proportion. May the real Photek please stand up...
2011 will see him drop a series of sounds that reflect the truest perception of him once and for all. Driven by his years of studio discipline; sharpened... by an acute awareness that he'll be received by the heads that know him well and ears that don't know him at all, Photek's new sound carries all the barbed motifs and icy atmospherics you'll know from seminal cuts such as 'Seven Samurai' and 'Hidden Camera' all tied up tight with his own take on today's contemporary genre-breaking melting pot.
Ardent displays of his eclectic method were there from the very beginning. The seeds had been sewn back in the dancefloor's most formative days, attending early raves, pretty much in his school uniform, and hearing DJs like Jumping Jack Frost fire their way through everything from Derrick May to Phil Collins. These influences are clear from his first EP on Metalheadz with the drum & bass meets downtempo 'Into The 90s'... 'Yendi', the flipside to the 'Modus Operandi' 12", was a prototype for dubstep while 'Mine To Give', a sassy slab of sexed up house coated in Robert Owens' iconic soul, set the foundations for the genreless battlefields well trodden by the likes of Commix and Mount Kimbie.
A list of his big screen scores should follow, but it won't. Photek carelessly yarns his years in LA as 'doing this and that', but it wasn't. Hived in the western world's most creative hub, his time since 2007's 'Form & Function Volume 2' has been a creative whirlwind. Collaborations with Nine Inch Nails and troubled troubadour Ray LaMontagne; sell out TekDUZ shows with 12th Planet and DJ Craze; the evening commute down Sunset Boulevard with Fab & Groove on Sirius reminding him of the UK bass culture he helped develop... Photek stands undeniably on the edge of undiluted inspiration.
Destination tomorrow: Photek's decorated past and diligent work ethic leads us here. The new music you've heard from Photek in 2011 is yet another chapter in a life spent overdosing on sonic nuances and boundary testing. In the past 12 months his new material has been remixed by the brightest young stars of dance music - Boddika, Falty DL, Addison Groove and Breach to name a few. In turn, Photek has remixed for the likes of Moby, Jess Mills, Distance, Ray Lamontagne and was part of Daft Punk's Tron Remixed package - for which he has been nominated for a Grammy. His newly re-launched label, Photek Productions, has this year released the 'Avalanche EP' which garnered international support from tastemakers such as Benji B, Gilles Peterson, Skream, Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and more, and the 'Aviator EP'. The single 'Closer' was also released on Pinch's pioneering Tectonic Recordings in June, adding to the gathering noise that you can't ignore - Photek is well and truly back and you can be sure that whatever sound he drops next, it won't fail to get the world's attention... Watch out in 2012 for his installment in the highly influential DJ Kicks compilation series on K7 Records and his long awaited new artist album.
Taylor Scott and Paul Ollinger, known as Mantis, are a relentless duo. Having begun their musical careers with metal & deathcore, the transition to heavy bass music was not so much a step down in intensity, but a slide into a world with spectacular tools to mix dense layers of music in new ways, and deploy it with force. Mantis was formed in early 2011 to test the boundaries of metal-influenced production, and plunge the result into a wash of haunting atmospheres. Mantis wants to provide “music to make you feel like you’re somewhere else, and you’ve never been more stoked to be there.”
With that target in sight, 2011 was a smashing first year; the momentum began in Atlanta, and overflowed with releases on labels such as Play Me, Heavy Artillery, BroTown Records, & Abducted Records. A standard was set with 2011's "All Worlds", their first EP, breaking the top 10 on Beatport's Dubstep releases, and held with 2012's "Futures" scoring #5 on Beatport's overall chart. The support of tastemakers such as Liquid Stranger, Downlink, Figure, Cyberoptics, Diesel, Genetix, Persist, & Sluggo, points to an accomplishment of musical influence on an international scale, and the potential for much more.
A history in Atlanta's metal scene, playing in acts such as WLTP and Attila, provides Mantis' cornerstone of fierce stage skills. Having become known across the USA for throwing down an aggressive live show with unmatched energy and only the heaviest bass music, Mantis' reputation stands as being one of the gnarliest new production teams in the scene.
With packed crowds at hand, and Beatport charts at their feet, only one goal remains- to raise the awareness of metal-influenced bass music... oh, and world domination.

Stranger Candy, aka Andrew Levene (formerly known as Avarice). The eccentric EDM DJ developed his notable eclectic, experimental style with numerous interests and influences stretching across numerous genres. EDM/IDM/Rock/Experimental/Classical/Hiphop/Bossanova, it doesn't matter. Stranger Candy is about the music.

Stranger Candy’s name is based on his blunt, left-of-center approach to the industry that makes Andrew Levene “Stranger Candy.” Stranger Candy is a forerunner, a trendsetter and a friend to his fans. He doesn't rely on his headphones, where as he needs to feel the music in real time as his fans do. On the spot mash-ups and build ups are essential to him. He considers his fans before his fame, Stranger Candy pays particular detail to the vibe and movement of the crowd versus how he may feel about a particular track. It all started at midnight on New Years Eve of 1992 in a hole in the wall skating rink. Damien Tucker aka DaddyDough (formerly Doughboy) had been a silent lover of electronic based music for years. When the clock struck 12 his life was changed forever. DaddyDough began his DJ career with old classics, hip hop, and booty shaking tunes. By 1996 Dough had landed regular residencies at several of the hottest electronic clubs in Atlanta. Over the next few years he began to build a strong following, and was playing at several events each week and traveling to some of the hottest venues in the Southeast. Over the last 20 years DaddyDough has played some of the biggest and most talked about venues and events in and around the Atlanta area. A master behind the decks, his smoothness when mixing from tune to tune is rivaled by few in today's scene. Always striving to drop his signature style of Drum and Bass, DaddyDough has remained one of the biggest hidden talents in the Atlanta EDM scene. With the ability to mix any style of dance music and even play track out in the club that even he has never heard sets DaddyDough a step above the nearest competition. DaddyDough is the real deal when he steps behind the decks and not many can say otherwise. Currently teamed up with his longtime partner, DJ Quirk, DaddyDough has been making strides to return to the world of production. Under the name EchoLabSoundSystem, Quirk and Dough have been ripping it up in the house realm, while DaddyDough stays true to his roots on solo events, bringing the best in Drum and Bass and his new guilty pleasure, Dubstep. DaddyDough is sure to educate the masses on how it was done back in the day and influence some of the up and coming artists and DJ's on how a true professional works behind the decks to always keep the dance floor moving each time he plays. Aside from his residency and regular Atlanta bookings, you can also always catch DaddyDough each and every Wednesday night from 9pm-12am EST on his internet radio show which has featured some of the biggest local talent from the Atlanta area and beyond. DaddyDough has also shared the stage with some of the biggest and most legendary names in electronic music, including LTJ Bukem, Bad Boy Bill, Simply Jeff, Soul Slinger, 187 aka Jordana, BT, Danny the Wildchild, Keoki, Spacemen, Trip Theory, Frankie Bones, Sandra Collins, and far too many more to name. ::: WHITE RABBIT (R.A.A.W)
As a classically trained pianist, music has always played a huge role in her life. Although DJ’ing began as a hobby, it quickly turned into a passion. The White Rabbit began her journey on two belt-driven turntables in November of 2009 and made her first public appearance in April 2010. Since then, she has been playing at numerous clubs and underground venues at parties in and around the Atlanta area, including a few out of state bookings. 2013 is going to be a dynamic year… more efforts will be put towards playing house/techno/minimal and the goal is to make room for production when time permits (just got her PharmD and is currently taking a series of licensing exams to become a pharmacist- busy busy busy!)
Her style infuses an eclectic blend of breakbeats with techno, minimal and house, for an average BPM within the range of 125-140. The breaks range from electro to dnb-influenced, florida to nu skool. Recently her breaks sets are encompassing a wider range of genres, from dubstep to trap to electro house and funky tech house.
Regardless the genre, one thing is certain-- the bass will be heavy and the sound will draw you in. With a love for dark melodies and dirrrrrrrty basslines, she plays each set with one goal in mind: to make people dance.
Be sure to join her on her next musical trip down the rabbit hole...
