The Esperanza Scholarship Foundation will award its 12th round of scholarships on May 18th, 2013 at Chaffey High School’s Gardiner Spring Auditorium. The program is a dynamic “Academy Awards” style show and awards ceremony, and this year’s performers include former lead singer of Santana Leon Patillo, Eddy Martin (GLEE), and the award-winning Chaffey High School Performing Arts Department.

The Foundation has raised over $1 million and awarded approximately $800,000 to over 700 students. This year, $100,000 will be awarded to 65 students who have maintained a 3.5 GPA and have shown a commitment to community service. The annual scholarship ceremony represents the foundation’s goal of doing its part to close the educational achievement gap based on high school completion and college attendance rates.

Past recipients of the scholarship have attended universities across the country, including the University of California, Brown, Harvard, Stanford, Cal State Universities, and local community colleges Chaffey College and Mt. San Antonio College, among others. Recipients have utilized the funds to defray the cost of books, travel, and transfer application fees and continue to receive mentorship and career-building resources as alumni.

Many who receive the scholarship are the first in their families to attend college, are returning to school after taking time off to work, or are transferring from community colleges to 4-year universities. Sichen Hernandez-Martinez, who received the scholarship as an Ontario High School graduate in 2008, will be transferring this fall from Chaffey College to Pomona College to pursue her B.A. in Social Psychology. Rosa E. Beltrán, who received the scholarship as an Ontario High School graduate in 2004, went on to Harvard to earn her B.A. in History and Literature and today runs a writing consulting business in Los Angeles while working on her first novel and poetry book. Both Hernandez-Martinez and Beltrán are the first in their families to attend college.

Foundation sponsors include over 50 corporate and hundreds of individual contributors. Chairman Alex Espinoza regards his experience in service of the Foundation as “a profoundly rewarding opportunity to connect business people with their communities through sponsorship of and interaction with talented young students whose journeys resonate with anyone who is passionate about service and education.” Currently, the foundation’s board consists of a dynamic team of educators, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, many of whom attended the local high schools and colleges whose current students the Foundation targets.

Through the Mayor’s Gala and mentorship events throughout the year, the Foundation endeavors to serve its recipients long after they have received their scholarship award and to encourage promising students from the West End of the San Bernardino Valley to continue to grow in their commitment to their educations and to lives of service to their communities.

Mayor's Gala Fundraiser Program: Student organizations can raise money by inviting their members to the event. If you are part of an organization or club and wish to inquire about this fundraising opportunity, please contact Monica at monica_espinoza@cjuhsd.net.

The Esperanza Scholarship Foundation was founded in 1991 by a network of business professionals and educators with the mission to encourage and support the educational success of residents of West San Bernardino Valley. In addition to the Gala event, the Foundation hosts other annual events to show its support of its scholars and community leaders, including an annual leadership dinner in Ontario, informal lunches to connect its scholars, staff, and leaders, as well as free workshops on professional skills for its alumni and community members.
