Escape to the Midwest

A Tech-Startup Business Expo

Saturday October 26, 2013, Noon–6 P.M.

Why is the Midwest rapidly becoming the heart of the next technology boom? Come to Escape to the Midwest and learn how the coming dot-cloud boom is changing the landscape and creating tech hubs in unexpected cities.

The Venue

Union Station, South Bend, IN. Once a thriving train station, now home to Global Access Point and other high tech companies, Union Station is conveniently parked on a major fiber-optic artery and just north of Ignition Park, the heart of South Bend's emerging tech hub.

The Players

Tech startups, designers, programmers, and entrepreneurs: Show off your new idea, get great feedback, build a team, find a funder.

Venture capitalists, business lenders, private investors: Discover promising new individuals and companies worth your consideration.

Business students, business service vendors (from marketing to data storage), small business advisors, clubs, and incubators: Help turn great ideas into market-ready inventions, services, or companies.

Techies: If you're interested in technology and want to see what the future holds, we have all the answers right here. Come and learn about the coming dot-cloud boom, and how it's already started to change the world.

The Opportunities

Entrance is just $12.50 per person.

Booth rental for exhibitors is only $50 and includes table, chairs, and electricity.

Schmooze café: get some food, meet people, do the networking thing.

Presenters (Presenters will also have booths at the show, so stop by and pick their brains).

Find out about the dot-cloud boom, and what it means for you. This emerging trend is shifting the tech focus away from the coasts, and towards emerging tech hubs like South Bend.

1:00–1:30   Dan Blacharski, Techie.com
Dan will introduce what Techie.com is, and present a keynote address about the dot cloud.

1:30–2:15 "One Word Domain" Contest Announced
This exciting contest will let start-up entrepreneurs pitch ideas for Internet companies, built around one of the high-profile domains in World Accelerator's portfolio.

2:30–3:00   Andrew Cronk, TempoDB
TempoDB is the first database service for time series data (ex: measuring thermostat temperatures, network latencies, heart rates). Time series is a unique Big Data problem that breaks traditional databases (MySQL, MongoDB, etc). Today, businesses spend months and millions attempting to build solutions to manage all this data and yet still fail to store as much as they need or analyze it effectively. TempoDB is a purpose-built database service that enables businesses to store and analyze massive streams of time series data, so they can learn from the past, understand the present, and predict the future.
TempoDB applied to the TechStars Cloud accelerator program to gain the resources necessary to build their business and were accepted into the inaugural class. Andrew will tell their story.

3:15-3:45   Kelly Schwedland, Elevate Ventures
Kelly Schwedland is an Entrepreneur-in-Residence with Elevate Ventures. His responsibilities include mentoring portfolio company leadership, and sourcing and evaluating new investment opportunities in Northern Indiana.
He is a senior executive, certified consultant and serial entrepreneur focused on assisting other entrepreneurs and early-stage companies to develop and execute business strategies, to obtain the resources required to meet their business objectives and a supporter of Lean Startup methodologies. His comprehensive background spans a multitude of industries that have included manufacturing, information technology, financial, business services and others.
Kelly has worked on over 30 Startups, two Angel backed companies, three companies with exits, invested in several startup, was part of an INC 500 company, grown a company to over $200 Million, and on innumerable occasions... failed!

3:45–5:00   Meet and Greet
