DAY ONE

 

Fundamentals of Emergency Medical Services Quality Improvement

 

 

Program Description

 

While the core principles of quality improvement are universal across the spectrum of care and service to customers, emergency medical services (EMS) is different in that we serve customers who for the most part have no choice but to accept what comes when they dial 911. This often affects our attitudes and motivations to serve above and beyond what is required from our service contracts. This day long training program applies the fundamental aspects of the Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) theorem to the specialties of delivering quality EMS services to our unique customer base and with performance measures as the source of our motivation to improve. Lectures and practical exercises are used to reinforce principles and to provide hands on group use of core quality improvement tools. The program integrates the basic outline of a written EMS Quality Improvement Plan (EQIP) as part of the overall training.

Below are the learning objectives, instructional team and program schedule for day one;

 

 

 

Learning Objectives

 

ü  Identify and apply basic principles of continuous quality Improvement (CQI) in the emergency medical services and prehospital care settings.

 

ü  Identify organizational structure for an EMS based Quality Improvement Program

 

ü  Identify traditional and new roles & responsibilities for EMS Quality Managers

 

ü  Identify the specific customer based needs of the EMS patient.

 

ü  Be able to define and develop an indicator specification sheet (ISS) from a template

 

ü  Develop and utilize quality measures for use in measuring the quality of EMS Services.

 

ü  Identify and use traditional CQI tools for analysis and decision making in EMS.

 

ü  Receive templates and tools to help organize and define EMS data and to answer EMS system questions

 

ü  Understand basic principles of Patient Safety Programs and Patient Safety reporting in EMS.

 

ü  Identify basic components and apply “Just Culture” principles to EMS performance improvement programs.

 

ü  Develop a basic understanding and outline for writing an EMS Quality Improvement Plan (EQIP).

 

 

 

PROGRAM FACULTY 

Craig Stroup, Team Leader 

Mr. Stroup holds a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Behavior with over twenty-five years of experience as a licensed paramedic working in the fire, air and ground ambulance sectors of the EMS industry. He is the Pre Hospital Coordinator for the EMS-CQI leadership team at Contra Costa EMS Agency and the Senior Director of the Center for EMS Performance Improvement (CEMSPI), a patient advocacy organization. He has received his CQI leadership certification training from the National Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and is engaged in the Healthcare Analytics program through UC Davis. He has authored CQI related articles in the Joint Commission (JCAHO); Journal of Quality; the Journal of Emergency Medical Services (JEMS); as well as two textbooks; “Fundamentals of EMS Quality Improvement” and “Developing and Utilizing Quality Indicators for EMS System Evaluation.”, both available at Amazon.com. Mr. Stroup has been appointed and chaired many California state EMS quality leadership committees.

This program has been submitted and is contingent on approval for eight (8) hours per day of continuing education for EMS personnel through the Sacramento County EMS Agency and the Los Angeles County EMS Agency.

 

 

REGISTRATION

 

Registration may be completed on a first come/first serve basis with 32 open seats available. The program may be closed to registrants at instructors discretion after enrollment reaches 32 per day.

 

 

 

CANCELLATION & REFUND

 

All cancellations and request for refund must be initiated and completed on the event registration site – www.eventbrite.com. Please allow for up to 14 business days to receive the refunded amount.

 

All cancellations and request for refunds must be initiated and done any time prior to the 12:00 am of the day for which the event is scheduled to begin. Refunds will be for the full amount paid.
