Employment Law for Community Enterprise
Teach-in and Q&A

SELC is hosting this teach-in and Q&A on employment law, because - whether you are employer, an employee, or neither - it's very important to know the basics of this subject. In particular, urban farms, worker cooperatives, food cooperatives, housing cooperatives, and social enterprises are often caught off guard when they realize that they have inadvertently created employer/employee relationships.

Janelle Orsi, Attorney at LawAttorney Janelle Orsi will present briefly on the challenges of determining who is or isn't an employee, explaining who may be considered an intern, volunteer, independent contractor, or partner.

Emily Bolt
Attorney Emily Bolt will give a summary of the legal requirements employers must learn about, including wage/hour law, workers compensation insurance, reporting requirements, payroll taxes, occupational health and safety laws, and other protections for employees.

Finally, attorney Elizabeth Burnett, will summarize the most common pitfalls that employers encounter.  A Q&A period will follow.
