Elementary School Library Summer Summit

Registration is now open for the Elementary School Library Summer Summit, sponsored by the Idaho Commission for Libraries’ (ICfL) Read to Me program. The summit will be held July 16-18, 2013 at the Boise Nazareth Retreat Center.

ICfL will provide lodging at the Retreat Center for participants and provide all meals and training materials during the summit. There is no registration fee. School districts or individuals are responsible for travel costs.

To foster learning and networking, participants are encouraged to stay at the Retreat Center during the Summit when possible, even if you live in the Boise area.

Registration is limited to the first 40 Idaho elementary library personnel to register and a waiting list will be kept on hand after those spots fill. If you register and find you can no longer attend, please contact Pam or Stephanie at the ICfL as soon as possible.

Summer Summit Objective:
To build the capacity of elementary library staff members to better serve the students and teachers in their schools.

Desired Outcomes:

·       Participants will increase their knowledge of how to improve library services.

·       Participants will increase their ability to advance literacy in their schools and communities.

·       Participants will develop action plans and next steps for implementing change in their school libraries.

Tuesday, July 16, 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

  • Making your library the best it can be – goals and planning
  • Background on how literacy develops in elementary age children and how school libraries can best support that development
  • Better serving families that live in poverty
  • Access, open schedules, and summer learning loss
  • What school library staff need to know about the Common Core
  • Collection development (including weeding) with particular emphasis on nonfiction for elementary students   

Wednesday, July 17, 8 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.  

  • Breakfast table topics  
  • Collaboration with teachers and public library staff
  • Information Literacy lesson plans in elementary schools? It can be done!
  • School library policies including reconsideration, fundraising, & working with volunteers
  • Technology Time – resources to explore and share
  • Professional development opportunities

Thursday, July 18, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

  • Breakfast table topics
  • Advocacy – how to influence stakeholders
  • Motivating kids to read, book talks and other techniques
  • Fun and friendly library environments
  • Tips and tricks for dealing with heavy schedules
  • Time to work on annual goal(s) and action plans
  • Evaluation & Wrap-Up
