Event Details

Ehnes String Quartet
with Michael Tree, viola
Brahms Quintet in G major, Op. 111
Schubert Quartet in A minor ("Rosamunde")

The season-opening concert presents the acclaimed Ehnes Quartet with guest violist Michael Tree of the Guarneri Quartet. The program includes Franz Schubert’s Quartet in A minor ("Rosamunde"), completing the Ehnes’ traversal of the three late string quartets and the string quintet by this composer. The balance of the program will be the second string quintet by Johannes Brahms Opus 111 in G major, written in 1890. Brahms expected his String Quintet in G major would be his final work. Despite concerns from the Rose Quartet at its première and those of Brahms' great friend and ally Joachim, the composer let it stand. The première in Vienna was a fabulous success and Brahms went on to write some of his greatest chamber works prior to his death in 1897.
