This is Chaos

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

CCAS Boardroom, ICC 241

“This is Chaos” (2007) is the last film of the late veteran Egyptian director Youssef Chahine. The film is a passionate condemnation of corruption, state violence, and police abuse in the critical years before the 2011 revolution. Hatem, the central character of the film, is a Mafioso-style cop that rules a neighborhood with an iron fist. Chahine’s untimely death before the film was finished drove his protégée Khaled Youssef to complete it.

The "Egyptian Contemporary Film Series" is a weekly film series taking place during the Spring 2014 semester at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS). The series will showcase some of the landmark and controversial productions from Egypt since 2000. During this period, Egyptian cinema, the most established and productive film industry in the Arab world, underwent a significant transformation due to factors including privatization, the rise of a new generation of filmmakers, and a burgeoning independent film collective, all of which contributed to an increasingly dynamic cinema.

Each film will be followed by a brief discussion moderated by Dr. Adel Iskandar.
