Egyptian Contemporary Film Series

The Virgin, the Copts and Me

A French-based Egyptian Coptic Christian filmmaker, Namir, takes his camera to his parents' home country to explore the much discussed apparitions of the Virgin Mary. In this endearing documentary about returning to ones roots, interrogating the past, the often futile pursuit of truth in faith, Namir captures a side of Egyptian life that often goes unexplored. Things take a turn for the hilarious when the filmmaker asks his relatives in an Asyut village to reenact the Virgin Mary's apparition for his film.

The "Egyptian Contemporary Film Series" is a weekly film series taking place during the Spring 2014 semester at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS). The series will showcase some of the landmark and controversial productions from Egypt since 2000. During this period, Egyptian cinema, the most established and productive film industry in the Arab world, underwent a significant transformation due to factors including privatization, the rise of a new generation of filmmakers, and a burgeoning independent film collective, all of which contributed to an increasingly dynamic cinema.

Each film will be followed by a brief discussion moderated by Dr. Adel Iskandar.
