The man who turned around GM explains why America is still a vital manufacturer–and what we can all learn from his experience

Ed Whitacre is a charismatic, no-nonsense Texan who fiercely believes that America can still manufacture products with substance.  He’d spent his entire career in telecom, ultimately running AT&T, before President Obama pulled him out of retirement to run GM.

In his new book American Turnaround: Reinventing AT&T and GM and the Way We Do Business in the USA and on his visit to Live Talks LA, Whitacre offers management insights from his long career, as well as prescriptive takeaways.

Before being pulled out of retirement to run GM by Obama, Ed Whitacre had spent his entire corporate career in the telecom business, where he ultimately ended up running AT&T.

He was chairman and CEO of AT&T from 2005-07, and was chairman and CEO of SBC Communications from 1990-2005.
