Reinventing Space -- Methods for Dramatically Reducing Space Mission Cost and Schedule
Under the direction of Dr. James Wertz, Microcosm is in the process of developing a new book on Reinventing Space, based on over 20 years of experience in both studying and implementing practical methods for dramatically reducing mission cost. In this seminar, Dr. Wertz discusses the need for dramatic cost reduction, whether it is possible, and how to go about doing it. This is not intended as a theoretical discussion, but as a practical and pragmatic approach to building a program aimed at creating high utility, much lower cost, more rapid and robust near-term space missions. He will also summarize the goals of Reinventing Space Project, a joint program between Microcosm and USC to both disseminate information and quantify the cost reduction potential by adding mission utility factors to the normal, weight-based cost models.
Dramatically reducing space cost and schedule, while retaining high mission utility and better mission reliability than we currently have, is exceptionally hard, but worldwide experience has shown that it can be done. How? Begin a proactive program to drive down cost and schedule; Use new, much lower cost technology (e.g., cubesat components, COTS, composites); Use strong mission engineering (e.g., trading on requirements, repeat coverage orbit); Learn from the experience of others (e.g., USU, SSTL, smallsat community); Make it somebody’s job to see that it gets done.
The Microcosm/USC Reinventing Space Project just got under way in February, 2013. The basic objectives are: Support 3-5 USC graduate students doing fundamental research in cost reduction; Provide seminars on Reinventing Space; Offer 5-day training programs on "Dramatically Reducing Space Mission Cost and Schedule" in LA, DC, and elsewhere; Expand considerably the data base of cost reduction alternatives, based so far as possible on real experience throughout the community; Work with other universities to contribute to the solution of this long-term problem; Restart the Journal of Reducing Space Mission Cost for peer-reviewed contributions. Example: We want to transform the current disaggregation/smallsat debate from a vague philosophical discussion to a quantitative discussion of costs and benefits.
Microcosm has applied methods for dramatically reducing space mission cost to the large scale problem of creating a lunar colony and created an architecture and economic model that shows the feasibility of such a colony if there is a reduction in inherent launch costs by a factor to 5 to 10.
Dr. James R. Wertz Biography
Dr. James R. Wertz is the President of Microcosm, a space technology company specializing for more than 20 years in reducing space mission cost. He is the editor and a principal author of a number of the most widely used books in astronautics, including Space Mission Analysis and Design, Space Mission Engineering: The New SMAD, Reducing Space Mission Cost, and Reinventing Space (in preparation) and the author of many professional papers and seminars on virtually all aspects of mission and orbit design and mission cost reduction. He is an adjunct professor of Astronautics at USC where he is currently teaching a 1-semester graduate course in “The Design of Low-Cost Space Missions,” a member of the International Academy of Astronautics, and a Fellow of both the AIAA and the British Interplanetary Society. He is also the founder and general chairman of the Reinventing Space Conference, held annually in Los Angeles.
