Downtown Grand Rapids, Inc. (DGRI) is proud to announce the second event in the Downtown Speaker Series. This event will focus on building a great urban waterfront, and will spotlight some of the great case studies in waterfront reclamation from around the world. The featured speaker, Alex Krieger, FAIA, is a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he has taught since 1977 and been named one of Harvard’s most outstanding teachers three times. Mr. Krieger is founding principal of Chan Krieger Sieniewicz, a 35-person architecture and urban design firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Offering services in architecture, urban design and planning, the firm has received more than two-dozen regional and national awards for its work. Mr. Krieger is a frequent advisor to mayors and their planning staffs, and authored the book Remaking the Urban Waterfront in 2004.
His book Remaking the Urban Waterfront details the natural opportunity to make memorable urban places, and explains the importance of and challenges inherent in transforming waterfronts: the key design issues, zoning and land use regulations, environmental obstacles, development incentives, and how the public and private sectors must work together to create spectacular new waterfronts. The book includes case studies of both small- and large-scale projects and describes how mixed-use, residential, retail/entertainment, commercial/ industrial, civic buildings, and parks were developed in the United States, Europe, and Australia.
