Dubbed the “Theremin Queen” by Village Voice, Austrian born Dorit Chrysler is hailed as one of the world’s most accomplished theremin players. Being notoriously hard to play, this electronic instrument generates sounds without being touched.
The theremin was invented in 1919 by Russian electro physicist Lev Sergejewitch Termen. It is one of the first electronic instruments that inspired the creation of synthesizers in future generations.
Dorit Chrysler encountered the theremin in 2000, some time after she had moved from here hometown of Graz to New York where she fronted the rock band “Halcion.” From then on she applied the theremin to her compositions and started her solo career. She has released several solo recordings and sang and played on albums of TheThe, Trentemoeller and Ohland, to name a few. Having toured with Anders Trentemoeller across the US and Canada this spring, she has just released her third solo album “Sea Of Negligence” on the US label Prurience Factory.
Dorit Chrysler is also the founder of the New York Theremin Society. She has performed at the Lincoln Center, Vienna Konzerthaus, World Trade Center, Palais Tokyo, the Sibelius Academy, the LA Disney Hall and the Moderne Kunstmuseet in Stockholm, just to name a few.
Dorit has shared the stage and collaborated with Anders Trentemoeller, Elliot Sharp,Marilyn Manson, Lee Hazelwood, Cluster, Gibby Haynes, JG Thirlwell and Lene Lovich.
She has scored for short movies and TV and her compositions for artist Jesper Just are part of permanent collections at the MOMA and the Guggenheim. She currently lives and works in New York, Graz and Copenhagen.
