On Friday, August 22,Lola’s Outdoor Retro Cinema at Sunnyside Cemetery, in partnership with Long Beach Cinematheque, presents DONNIE DARKO!
One part surrealist Lynchian nightmare scenario, one part 80′s John Hughes high school flick, director Richard Kelley’s directorial debut Donnie Darko relishes its influences while remaining its own unique creation. Donnie Darko is the story of a young, mentally disturbed high schooler named Donald Darko who is having visions of the end of the world, an apocalypse that he believes is quickly approaching. Oh, and there’s also the vision of a giant terrifying rabbit, who may be hypnotizing Donnie and influencing him to commit destructive acts. Can Donnie save the universe AND navigate the waters of late 80′s high school life? In just 28 days?
Starring a young Jake Gyllenhal in the title role that would put him on the map, as well as an all-star line-up featuring Drew Barrymore, Jena Malone, Mary McDonnell, Katharine Ross, Patrick Swayze and Noah Wyle, Donnie Darko was largely ignored upon release in 2001, only to quickly gain a cult following on DVD and became one of the biggest cult classics of all time.
