Donna Hopkins, Carly Gibson, Hannah Zale and Julie Holmes together and performing in the round!
Donna Hopkins is legit: She's Alabama-bred, farm-raised in hard times. Her mom performed with rock bands in mini-skirts and go-go boots. Her grandfather's music was a tremendous inspiration. Hopkins has matured into a genuine triple threat as songwriter, singer and guitarist.
As a songwriter... Hopkins seasons swampy, Gulf Coast funkiness with angular voicings of extended and suspended chords. Listen for examples on "In Spite of Yourself" or "Don't Ask Why." It's classic tension-and-release with a groove and lyrics that reveal mileage, honesty and soul. It's survival music you can dance to.
As a singer, Hopkins has a big, distinctive voice that effectively communicates varied emotions. The acoustic "Everything Money Can Buy" puts you on the front porch on a summer evening, right about dinnertime.
As a guitarist, Hopkins can be, at turns, raw and articulate. She's her own woman with equal parts John Lee Hooker and Billy Gibbons, and a dash of Jimmie Vaughan and Robin Trower circa Bridge of Sighs.
In the music world, Carly Gibson is what you would call a triple threat: she not only composes soulful and sophisticated music, she also sings beautifully and plays a mean acoustic guitar. In addition, she is developing a substantial reputation for her skill on electric guitar, having performed a number of times as a lead guitarist with Caroline Aiken and as lead guitarist for Gibson Wilbanks. Carly may be young but she sports an old soul; her dedication to her art is readily apparent in her performance.
Carly’s music resonates with the flavors that reflect her own diverse musical tastes and influences. Rock, jazz, folk, blues, Americana, bluegrass and funk all find their place in her repertoire. She counts among her influences such songwriters as Caroline Aiken, Paula Cole, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Tori Amos, as well as guitarists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Angus Young and Michael Hedges.
Hannah Zale's unique musical style combines her classical training, love of the blues narrative, and rock n' roll attitude. The young front-woman and songwriter has recorded 2 EP's with her band Boomfox, as well as headlined The Georgia Theatre and 40 Watt Club. As a recent graduate of The University of Georgia, Hannah Zale earned degrees in Social Media Theory and Music Business and now the soulful songstress is ready to take the next step in her career as a solo artist.
Hannah Zale has been called a combination of Hayley Williams and Michael Buble with a 90's flare. Inspired by nature, relationships, and the stressful journey to adulthood, Hannah Zale performs every lyric with love and passion.
Julie Holmes is an Athens-based guitarist and singer. Her bluesy voice and instrumental skill lend a soulful, emotional feel to her performances.
