Universal Design: Rethinking How to Teach Students with (and without) Disabilities
In the last few decades, universities have seen an increasingly diverse student body and, with it, a rising demand for instructors to respond to the racial, gender, and socio-economic diversity in their classrooms. Unfortunately, recent strides in inclusive teaching have left behind another growing minority population at elite universities: students with disabilities. How can instructors best promote learning for students with disabilities? Despite issues of confidentiality and stigma, instructors can do more than include stock phrasing in their syllabi and honor individual student requests for accommodations. This workshop will introduce Universal Design for Learning, a simple pedagogical approach to inclusive teaching, and offer practical tips on how to make classes more accessible and compelling for students with disabilities--and students of all learning styles.
