Program Description:

College demographics are ever-changing.  The groups of students who were once considered underrepresented or “minorities” are emerging as the majority.  As career services professionals, we are on the front line for engaging and preparing this emerging group of students for the workforce.  However, it is imperative that we are competent in delivering services that will benefit the career preparation of these students.

As a participant in this three-day workshop, career services professionals will learn how to develop diverse talent that is confident and capable of identifying and pursuing their career goals.  More specifically, attendees will:

  • Determine the key characteristics among diverse talent that influences the delivery of career services
  • Recognize their career aspirations and unique challenges
  • Identify strategies for assisting students with career preparation
  • Identify strategies for managing their successful transition into the workplace

Session #1: Diverse Talent on College Campuses

As career services professionals, it is important to recognize who is present on college campuses and how best to serve these students.  It is also necessary for us to understand the influences on their career plans, aspirations, and expectations.  In this session, you will learn about who is attending college, common characteristics, career pursuits, and workplace expectations.  A diverse panel of students will also share their backgrounds and their experiences.

Session #2: Connecting with Diverse Talent on Your Campus

When was the last time you reflected on your approach to reaching diverse talent?  Serving students should not be a one size fits all approach.  Assessing students’ interests and challenges are essential to delivering appropriate services.  In this session, we will review the career decision-making process for students, common challenges when deciding on a career, and how to best serve them.  We will also review strategies for helping them successfully transition into the workplace.

Session #3: Assisting Employers with Diversity Recruitment

Have you ever been asked to help an employer identify diverse talent or post a position targeting a specific group?  These questions may cause you to pause and wonder if you can really assist employers in such manner.  This session will provide career services professionals with information on how to assist employers with their diversity recruitment efforts.   You will hear from a legal expert who will share insight on legal practices as it relates to diversity recruitment.
