The Sports Legacy Institute (SLI) is a 501(c)(3) that was founded in 2007 by Dr. Robert Cantu and Christopher Nowinski to “solve the concussion crisis” by advancing the study, treatment, and prevention of the effects of brain trauma in athletes and other at-risk groups. SLI achieves this mission through education and prevention programs, advocacy, policy development, and support of medical research at the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University School of Medicine (BU CSTE). The BU CSTE was created in 2008 as a partnership between SLI, BU, and the Department of Veterans Affairs and conducts cutting-edge clinical and pathological research on the long-term effects of repetitive brain trauma, with a focus on the degenerative brain disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).
About Christopher Nowinski
Christopher Nowinski is the co-founder and executive director of the Sports Legacy Institute (SLI), a non-profit organization dedicated to solving the sports concussion crisis, and co-director of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at the Boston University School of Medicine, where he is also a PhD candidate in Behavioral Neuroscience. Nowinski also serves on the NFL Players Association Mackey-White TBI Research Committee and the Ivy League Concussion Committee.
A former Harvard football player and WWE professional wrestler, Nowinski was forced to retire from a series of concussions in 2003. His challenging recovery from post-concussion syndrome led him to write the critically-acclaimed book Head Games in an effort to educate parents, coaches, and children about this previously hidden public health issue. The book later inspired an award-winning documentary of the same name in 2012.
“When I first met Chris Nowinski, I knew he had the passion and commitment
to make a difference in the world of concussions. His book, Head Games, speaks to
the severity and dangers of concussions and is a must-read for everyone.
His work and determination have inspired me to promote increased education,
awareness and recognition of the concussion injury.”

and founder of ThinkTaylor.org
