  • "Who am I?" led by Sean O'Shea
In Developmental Variations, we explore the benefits of establishing meaningful relationships with the children in our classrooms. In order to accomplish that, it is a logical first step to reflect on our own identity. In a brief activity simply titled "Who Am I?", participants will consider beneficial aspects of themselves and make decisions about which aspects are most valued. The relationship of this self-assessment to our work with children with disabilities, and the establishment of classroom community will be considered.
  • Developmental-Interaction Approach led by Margie Brickley
The integration of theory, practice and experience is at the heart of what we do at Bank Street. We will explore the developmental-interaction approach through several interactive activities. The activities will begin with an experience where participants will use what they know about children to identify developmental themes that help teachers be more effective. We will also incorporate videos of children and teachers that illustrate the philosophical approach at Bank Street. We will end with an exploration of culture (on Mars!) that is both fascinating and meaningful.
  • Using a Student's Full Linguistic Repertoire in Classroom Instruction led by Cristian R. Solorza
We explore the importance of language varieties and translanguaging theory as they are related to a student's literacy development. We will engage in an activity to think about our own linguistic resources as well as biases. What linguistic resources are most valued in school? Why? How can we advocate for those varieties that are less valued? Through our discussion, we will consider practices that build on a student's language(s) and how we can defend their use in the classroom.

Closing Remarks (Auditorium)
1:00pm – 1:10pm

Lunch
1:10 pm – 2:00pm
