Event Details

You have the lighting dialed in just right.  The background is saying what you want it to say, the image, the look you have in your head is starting to come together.  And then you have your subject...  Now what?

The human eye immediately grabs on to the human form first in an image, particularly the fact, particularly the eyes.  This is to say, your subject is THE most important element of your image!  Do you know what to do, how to act, what to say to pull the look you want out of them?

This class is designed to help you do just that.  Learn the tricks and techniques used by the pros in the real world to effectively get the results the are looking to achieve.

You will learn from the experiences of Lisa Ramsay, a NYC fashion photographer, and once we’re ready we’ll have the opportunity to practice taking photos while directing a subject in a real world shoot. Demonstration and student hands-on interaction is not only encouraged, it’s required!

Topics to be covered include:

●  Most effective approaches to working with your subject

●  Guidelines on how to interact - what to say, what to do, what NOT to say, what NOT to do!

●  Getting out from behind the camera and how to engage with your subject

●  Poses, poses, and more poses

●  Lighting techniques

●  How to match the light to your subject

We will use an everyday person for the first half of the Workshop to practice directing and posing a typical subject. We will then have a professional working model for the second half of this Workshop to practice directing and posing a model. Be prepared not only to shoot in a face-paced environment, but to assist with the model and lighting setups. This Workshop is for students only and intended to be a creative learning experience for all.

Requirements: You must know your Manual Settings! If you do not know your Manual Settings, please email Dawn at dawn@nycdpw.com to set up a Private Instruction Session on Manual Settings. Bring your camera, pen, paper and lots of questions!

Technical Requirements: You must bring your camera and your camera’s USB cord that plugs your camera to your computer as we will tether to a large computer screen to see and comprehend lighting concepts from results immediately as they are shot. This is a learning experience, so NO exceptions! Bring extra memory cards and at least two fully charged batteries. Pen and paper are necessary for notes.

PLEASE NOTE:  While we are just trying to give students the opportunity to use their own cameras, the class is a learning experience for all involved - and ALL students need to be able to view in real time what is being shot so ALL can learn what to tweak in real time. This is to prevent students from batch shooting and then finding preventable mistakes after the fact with the inability to reshoot due to time constraints. If your camera does not sync with the computer via tether, please be prepared to use the studio’s Nikon D300. It is easy to use and has been exclusively used by students for past Workshops. (It works like any other camera - you need only to be shown where to adjust the shutter and aperture.) Please inquire within as to camera models with the most issues in tethering to our iMac. Regardless of what camera is used, you will receive all images you take in the class by a zip file in an email - the same day or by next day.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: There is a cat on the premises but he will be put out of the way during the course of this Workshop.

About the Instructor:

Lisa began her interest in photography at a very young age photographing everything from people to events to oceanscapes and then some. Her photography career began in the studio of Fairchild Publications during the day - publisher of Women’s Wear Daily, W Magazine and Footwear News, among other publications - while at night, she studied photography and fine arts at the School of Visuals Arts. She had the best of both worlds at the time - real life work experience and schooling in fine arts. After remaining at Fairchild Publications for ten years, she left to pursue a freelance photography career. Lisa has taught all levels of photography at the International Center of Photography and the Educational Art Alliance with topics ranging from lighting to alternative processes to darkroom techniques. Lisa has always been and continues to be an exhibiting artist. To see some of Lisa’s work, you may visit her website at: http://www.lisaramsayphotography.com/.
