About Dr. Shoultz:

Dr. David Shoultz is the director of grantee & partner engagement and a member of the foundation’s leadership team. In this role, he leads a team that focuses on strengthening the foundation’s relationships with its partner organizations in order to achieve maximum impact. He and his team work across the foundation, furthering its commitment to quality interactions, clear and consistent communication, and ongoing feedback with grantees. The team uses a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods to ensure that timely and actionable feedback is available to the foundation’s program areas, and also helps to facilitate ongoing interactions with its partners.

Dr. Shoultz joined the Gates Foundation in 2009. Prior to assuming his current role in January 2013, he was a deputy director in the Global Health Program. He was also the relationship manager for PATH—one of the foundation’s largest grantees—and he served as board member at OneWorld Health, the drug development affiliate of PATH.

Dr. Shoultz received his bachelor’s degree, MS, and Ph.D from the University of Washington in Seattle. His MBA is from the Albers School of Business & Economics at Seattle University, where he is a faculty member in the Executive MBA Program. For the past 14 years, he has been a member of the affiliate faculty for the departments of Global Health and Epidemiology at the University of Washington.

Prior to joining the foundation, Dr. Shoultz worked as a member of the senior management team for a number of clinical research organizations, participating in the development of new medicines, including PPD, PRA International, and Biomedical Systems.

In addition to his role at the Gates Foundation, Dr. Shoultz is on the Board of the Geneva Foundation, where he also serves as the inaugural chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee.
