The honorary dinner guest for this dinner is Dr. Marian Simion who taught “Religion in Collective Violence” last semester at the Harvard Extension School.
ABOUT DR. MARIAN SIMION
Postdoctoral Fellow, Harvard Divinity School
Dr. Marian Gh. Simion is a political scientist and theologian, currently serving as assistant director of the Boston Theological Institute and as field education supervisor at Harvard Divinity School. He was recently appointed as postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Divinity School. During the past seven years, Simion taught peace ethics at Boston College and interdisciplinary studies at Hellenic College in Brookline, Massachusetts.
Dr. Simion focuses his research on international security, comparative politics, political theology, religious phenomenology, canon law, and collective violence, with a special focus on Eastern and Oriental Christianity. In 2008 he founded The Institute for Peace Studies in Eastern Christianity (IPSEC) for the purpose of advancing research and curricula development for peace studies.
Dr. Simion is the author of Religion and Political Conflict: From Dialectics to Cross-Domain Charting (with Patriach Bartholomew, David Little, and Mihnea Motoc; Presses Internationales Polytechnique, 2011), which deals with the double-competition theory in conflict resolution. He has co-authored several recent publications, including "The Future of the Arctic: A Key to Global Sustainability" (USA Club of Rome Report, 2012), Just Peace: Orthodox Perspectives (WCC Publications, 2012), and Overcoming Violence: Religion, Conflict and Peacebuilding (Boston Theological Institute, 2010).
